Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld compatibility

what packages are compatible with Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld (or does MS call this now "Windows Embedded Handheld 8.1" or whatever, the naming and support diverges more and more)?

One may say yes, as far as a package or code is Windows Phone 8.1 compatible, but this will not work for all API calls and there is no one-stop API reference for WE81H. For example IsolatedStorage (WP81) is not available and has to be replaced by other class.

There are two programming models in Windows Phone 8.1 - Silverlight and the newer XAML Apps (wpa81). There are charming libraries for both. For example Charming Storage (InTheHand.Storage) on Silverlight exposes a wpa81 style InTheHand.Storage.ApplicationSettings API which wraps the Silverlight IsolatedStorageSettings. For file access itself you would use the build in Windows.Storage APIs on wpa81 with the addition of a TryGetItemAsync extension method in InTheHand.Storage which allows you to check if files exist without throwing an exception. The NuGet packages install the correct versions into your project whichever platform you are using.

Hello Peter

now I "cachted" you: I am talinking about Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld and not Windows Phone 8.1.

Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld (WE8H) supports C#, XAML, C++, WinRT and Silverlight where Silverlight is deprecated by MS.

WE8H is not fully compatible with Windows Phone 8.1.

Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld is not fully compatible with Windows Embedded Handheld 8. The sample code for a BarcodeReader project ( will not compile for WE8H. The working code is at

Now, again, what of the code here is WE8H compatible.

Windows Embedded Handheld 8.1 is a superset of Windows Phone 8.1 which adds additional APIs for Barcode Scanning and device lockdown. All of the Windows Phone 8.1 APIs in the Charming project work with Handheld 8.1 too.
